What is "Aquatic Therapy"?

Aquatic therapy is skilled physical therapy provided in our warm saltwater pools that can help you meet a variety of goals. The warm water helps to increase circulation, respiratory rate, muscle metabolism, strength, flexibility and ease of movement while reducing pain through decreased weight-bearing and reduced joint stress. We offer both shallow water and deep water environments, allowing for therapeutic exercise in both weight bearing and non-weight bearing.

Who can benefit from Aquatic therapy?

Almost everyone can benefit from aquatic therapy, from those with weight bearing restrictions, to spine and joint pain, and our competitive athletes and swimmers. Aquatic therapy will often accelerate your rehab as muscles can be facilitated in different ways, and patients can often perform exercises in the pool that they are unable to perform on land, such as squats, or single leg balance. You may need clearance from your physician if you are post-op, or have certain skin conditions.

Examples of patient diagnoses that can benefit from aquatic therapy :

  • Pre and post-op total joint replacements

  • Poor balance

  • Spine Pain

  • Parkinson’s

  • Post-op weight bearing restrictions ( ankle or knee surgery), or weight bearing restrictions due to sprains and strains

  • Athletes with injuries such as ankle sprains, ACL tears and reconstruction, meniscal injuries, dancers hips, throwers
